Problem
Client at Croydon Rail Depot had to create a large excavation in stiff clay to allow construction of a replacement Wheel Lathe inside the building of the rail depot and had to be carried out during night shifts due to noise issues for other workers carrying out day shift works nearby.

Solution
MGF was engaged to produce a design for a sacrificial sheet pile cofferdam which would allow safe construction of the Wheel Lathe.

Outcome
Interdrive Piling Ltd installed 89nr GU13N piles @ 3 metres long and 52nr @ 4.5 metres long to conform with the sacrificial works design utilising our SG75 Movax and Kobelco 35 Tonne Excavator to construct the required cofferdam.

Interdrive Piling had to gain access inside the building with very restricted access and precision ‘banking’ of our machine was required with 100mm to spare both width and height wise through the entrance into the building.

Restricted access with side walls and overheads made the works complicated but through planning ,preparation and with collaboration with the client allowed use of the gantry crane inside the building to deliver the piles to the works interface ensuring Interdrive Piling completed works ahead of programme and within budget costs of the works.

Upon completion of the cofferdam , our client constructed the Wheel Lathe and once instructed, Interdrive Piling returned to site to cut down the sheet piles utilising oxygen/propane burning equipment to the level of the floor of the building.
